ARTIST STATEMENT
Ever since I was a young singer, I’ve been compared to Paul Robeson. I was asked constantly if I sang his trademark song ‘Ol Man River’ and was told my voice reminded people of his. To be honest, I didn’t know much about him at the time and became annoyed that people kept asking me to sing what I considered a minstrel song. Since then, I’ve learned much more about his life and found that I indeed had a connection to him; But the connection revealed itself not through superficial comparisons of our race, singing voices, and socially engaged work, but through his most vulnerable human moment: Many don’t know that while in political exile in Moscow, he was poisoned with LSD by the CIA, and attempted suicide in a hotel bathroom. This moment showed me he wasn’t a distant mythic figure; but instead, a faceted human facing and surviving life’s greatest difficulties. This vulnerable moment allowed me to move past seeing him simply as an idol to understanding him as an ancestor.
SHORT DESCRIPTION
In ROBESOИ, Davóne Tines grapples with the legacy of a hero. Exploding the musical repertoire of Paul Robeson, Tines takes us on a trip from the stage of Carnegie Hall to the floor of Moscow hotel room, in an attempt to understand an icon through his own words.
LONG DESCRIPTION
In ROBESOИ, Davóne Tines reimagines Paul Robeson’s musical repertoire as the soundtrack to a fever dream in a Moscow hotel room. In order to take on this expansive psychological and aesthetic space, Tines created a band called The Truth alongside bassist and sound artist Khari Lucas and pianist John Bitoy. The score is comprised exclusively of songs Robeson actually sang – across gospel, classical, Broadway, and folk music – but in new arrangements and interpretations that shape-shift and time-travel through styles and genres to fully explore the material’s connection to Tines’ own work and our time. The piece is conceived and staged by Zack Winokur and will be released as an album by Nonesuch Records.[ESTIMATED RUN TIME: A DENSE 60 MINUTES]
